"Discovering Family and Making Connections"
Slavery in America began when twenty Africans were brought to the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619, to aide in the production of crops.  The matriarch our family was born enslaved in the 1800s.  After the Emancipation Proclamation was signed ending slavery in 1865, Eliza gathered most of her children and their families to make their home in the upstate area of Laurens, S.C.   We are the descendants of Eliza Martin.  This is where our story and thousands of other African Americans began.
